Newbie from North Texas

Drumstick Diva - I'm looking for mainly egg layers. Thanks to everyone for the advice. I have been a little worried about our Texas summers....it gets so hot and I want to get something that will tolerate the heat well.

Another breed you might want to consider are Australorps. They are extremely hardy in both heat and cold. I raised them where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (sometimes more), and while my other dual purpose breeds were listless, panting, and holding their wings out, my Australorps were going about their usual business like troopers. In addition, they are very calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and excellent layers of large, brown eggs.

Michael - we live in Rowlett. I hate to admit that I have not completely decided.....the place I'm buying them told me they ordered Rhode Island Reds, Americanas, Barred Rock and Marans. I want good egg layers. What kind do ya'll recommend?
Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

If you are wanting egg layers, then all of those choices are good. Especially marans and RIRs. Barred rocks are more of pets if that interests you.

I find I can literally spend hours on this site hopping around and reading how to do better for the girls so please ask any and all questions... someone will answer.
