Hello together :)!

My name is Andreas, i live in Germany, i 'm (soon) 44 yrs old and father of a six year old son. That as basics ;).

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I first got chicken in 2011 by my own, but had to do with a laying flock 14 years earlier. Also my great grandfather had chicken, he was the "chicken grandpa" for me, and had surely sown that passion in me. And in 2011, with the purchase of a own house and property, my dream could become reality at last.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now 20 hens, 1 rooster, 9 chicks (9 more to come in about a week).

(3) What breeds do you have?
My own mix flock, breeded for meat and eggs, selected on health and vitality in the somewhat special climate we live here. Addingly for feather and egg color Marans and Exchequer Leghorns.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
No support for the mass production industry, avoiding of Products out of animal torturing production. The best tasting eggs and chicken meat on the planet.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Nature in general, gardening, birding, Ghost hunting ^^

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Luckily married, father of a six year old son, as other pets we have corn and rat snakes.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I was a long time reader before (some 10 years now), but was never sure enough of my english. Now, after watching eight Ghost Hunting shows over a time span of 13 yrs now, plus the Shows of Josh Gates and watching many documentaries in english as well as having some american friends on facebook, my convidence has grown pretty strong. So i 've thought, it 's time to dare :)!

The step to join in here fully was taken, because you all have so much more knowledge about chickens in your little fingers than (too) many german keepers in the whole person. You have the right attitude. You love your chickens, you care good for them, but you seldom hesitate to use them according to their purpose. Here in Germany there are too much "chicken cuddlers", the onsight is merely just black or white, not much in between.
Either they love (and sometimes force) their animals to live or death by any costs, or not. Either you can use your chickens for other purposes than eggs, and help them over, when sick or otherwise in need of selection/ immediate need to react, or not. Too much divided in the two sides of the medal here.
And way too little expertise in 90 % of the normal hobby keepers. All not too rosy here, also in other aspects of the hobby, and so i decided finally to join your community :).

Best regards,
Andreas

Hello, Andreas, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Your English is just fine!
I agree with you on the reasons for getting chickens. I abhor the thought of supporting commercial egg and meat production practices. I love knowing that the food I put on my table came from healthy, happy chickens!!
You'll find a few chicken cuddlers here too! But most of us have a more realistic attitude about our beloved birds.
