Hi from Plant City :)

I have been reading this page often but finally decided to become a member. I don't have any chickens yet, hoping to change that soon though.

Hoping to find a few sweet chickens to keep as pets and enjoy their eggs. I have 2 boys and we can't wait to get started and raise some chicks. :)

Lots of sweet chickens out there. I am partial to the Orpington breeds...Buff Orpingtons and the Black Australorps. These two are very kid friendly, docile, tolerate being carried around, great layers and hardy over all. My birds follow me around like drooling puppies looking for goodies or a soft lap to sit on. Huge lap hounds.

Thank you all. I picked these up today to get started. I was told the black ones are Barred Rock and the smallest one in my hand is actually fave so far. She falls asleep and snuggles up when I hold her to my chest. Not sure what the others are. The guy at the feed store was not sure.

Temporarily I have them in this tupperware tote but seems small so going to the store to see what I can do better for them. Do I need a heating lamp? The person I bought the black chicks from said no, but the place with the yellow said yes.

Yes, they definitely need a heat lamp at this age. They need a spot that is about 95* right now and you will lower that about 5* each week. You want the tote or whatever big enough so that there can also be cooler spots (you don't want the whole thing 95*) so the heat lamp would be on one end and the other end would be cooler. Be sure you dip their beaks in the water (you might want to add a teaspoon or two of sugar to the water to give them a quick boost) so that they know where it is. And watch to be sure all are eating and drinking well. They should be pretty active and bouncing around in between sleeping so if watch if any are too quiet.
Looks like you got a nice assortment of chicks, the red looks like a Rhode Island Red or Production Red, the lighter one could be Red Sex Links with the lightest maybe a Buff Orpington. Your Barred Rock is adorable, the other black one could be a Black Sex Link, she is pretty dark for a Rock.
