Welcome to Backyard Chickens! We are glad you joined the flock!:welcome BYC is a helpful site providing all the information you need to know about poultry! There is always space for more members on the BYC roost!:highfive: In this situation, free-ranging is not a wise idea if you keep losing your chickens to predators. Keeping them in a pen or enclosed run will reduce your chances of losing birds. Especially depending on how secure your coop is, any missed holes must be over looked. I agree that it is not a good idea to keep losing my chickens to predators. The funny / interesting thing though is that the original set of birds that I got back in May seem to have an instinct about impending danger and are able to avoid it. They used to hang out in the trees near the woods for quite a while but have now set up shop in front of the house under the large spruce trees. I also got a pen and hooked up both of the coops to it. This way, the chickens are always in the pen until I let them out. I just feel bad about keeping them locked up / contained. Nonetheless, their safety is also equally important, if not more so. Hope to get an electric fence so that they have more room to forage / free range and still be safe. I think I became a little too placid as my original flock free ranged about a week or two after I got them. I would let them out from their run in the morning and then close the door to the run at night when they were back in the coop. This gave me the false sense that I did not have any predator issues. And most likely I didn't until one stumbled upon the new set of birds one night. After that, they were probably like finally, a new restaurant in town.
