Hatching

I have been (not so patiently) awaiting the hatching out of 15 Welsh Harlequin ducklings, ordered from Metzer Farms. Beforehand, I studied everything I could get my hands on, gleaning the most from Holderread's "Raising Ducks" and Damerow's "Hatching and Brooding."

I keep wishing someone was here to hold my hand in this and give some reassurance! Despite conflicting info on several points, it seems common knowledge that the babies should be enjoying the brooder by now? Incubation began in a new Brinsea Octagon 20 Advance on July 31st at 8pm, so it has been nearly 30 days.

Six eggs pipped the shell, two on the wrong end, only one progressed enough to make several breaks, a dime-sized area with most of the membrane appearing intact. For a couple hours I could see pulsing at the hole, and peeping through oozing yolk, and I've seen nothing more for over 24 hours :( Two wobble occasionally, but I fear they aren't going to make it since they aren't 'unzipping' the shell...this is so depressing it's keeping me awake all night. It hadn't occurred to me that they would all die at the very end!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear your hatch is not going so well at the moment :hugs
Have your temps been stable during incubation? As you have said a couple have pipped at the wrong end of the egg, did you incubate them with fat end of the egg upright? If they were incubated with the pointy end up this can cause this. Malpositioned chicks/ducklings often need help to hatch and can take longer as they do their internal and external pip in one go so need more time. Here is an article on assisted hatching ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/step-by-step-guide-to-assisted-hatching

If you can see yolk coming from the egg I'm afraid this is not a good sign. It would mean the yolk that they should absorb prior to hatch has been ruptured and the duckling may pass as it has no food reserves then to live form during hatch.

Please do drop by the duck section for more help from the duck experts ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks

Wishing you the very best of luck :fl

Any updates to how your hatch is doing?

Thank you for advice and encouragement! I just typed an incredibly lengthy response with all details I could think of, and the page refreshed and lost it before I could post. I'm already up waaaay to late (4AM here) babysitting survivors and researching/wondering if I should do anything more for the remaining eggs, so I will just say for now that three of the 15 hatched on day 30 and seem to be doing very well. Thanks for the welcome too...I think I need a few days to destress before I get more involved in the BYC forum.
