Both sets of my grandparents were farmers and I've always wanted chickens. We finally got our fist chicks in April from a local farm, however 4 out of 7 turned out to be cockerels. Though we live on 3 acres, we are inside our city limits and cannot have roos. The three remaining hens are now 4 months old and truly members of the family. We have a black Marans, a blue Marans, and a lavender Ameracauna. Wanting to replace the cockerels that we had to rehome, we very recently added an EE chick and two Sussex chicks. My husband is retired, and I am a Librarian in our small city. We love sitting in our backyard with our chickens, listening to their calming chatter, and letting them climb on us. Truthfully, they've made the pandemic much more bearable for the two of us, and we feel lucky and grateful. We are animal-loving, outdoorsy people, looking forward to our own fresh eggs this fall. I found BYC before we got our chicks, as I was being a good librarian and doing my research ;) Since then, I've been back many times, benefiting from the awesome advice of the members here. Thank you! I'm very happy to be an official member.
