Newbie Help... Lots of questions

Thank you Flockwatcher that is really good advice! The killing is what will be hard for me. But I would much rather eat something I knew had a happy life and was raised with kindness than a poor factory animal. I'm hoping it works out with wyandotte flock he seems pretty passionate about them and doesn't have many chicks. I will definitely look them over closely. I've had all kinds of animals including farm types and have vet tech experience, so I feel pretty confident that I can spot sick chickens.

Things that we forget to mention: Remember to hold the wings down either by killing cone or with your hands, the flapping is what gets the blood all over you. If you cut too close to the head itself then push on the chicken they can still make a noise. They are NOT alive, the air in their lungs just gets pushed threw their voice box. If they just ate they can poop a little while processing, so have a hose handy. Make sure you have a sharp knife, it makes it easier for both of you. You can never have too much ice. Chicken blood does wash out really well. Also, remember that that rooster has had a really great life and one bad day that helps feed your family. It does get easier.

if you have a dog, train it to be nice with your hens. good breeds are the Orpington, many bantam breeds do well with children too. but when you're at the hatchery ask around about friendly breeds, or call if you plan to ship.
