Hello everyone!! We are new to owning chickens. By we I mean my husband and I. We started off with 2 roosters and 3 hens of various breeds. I'm not 100% sure on the breeds.
Recently, due to an unfortunate dog attack, we lost 1 rooster and 2 hens. Almost 2 weeks ago we started incubating a batch of eggs. We have 7 in there right now and our hen is sitting on 2, which is why she wasn't attacked. So we're really hoping to reup our flock. Our rooster that survived is a little beaten up. His back is scraped about the size of my palm. I've soaked him in warm water and epsom salt and put neosporin on it. In my opinion, he's looking and feeling a lot better.
I guess you can say we keep our chickens as pets. Pets who benefit us by giving us eggs so I think it's a win/win.
I've joined BYC because I was always looking up my questions and concerns and was always brought to BYC so I figured I might as well

Hello fellow Californian.

I'm sorry to hear about your dog attack. I've read about that a lot it seems. I joined BYC for the same reason you did. You won't be sorry that you joined either. This place has more collected knowledge than you'll find anywhere else.

Sorry about the dog attack. Many pet owners do not seem to be responsible - they just turn their dogs loose. After all most people just say "it was ONLY a chicken." How would they feel is the dog was slaughtered? You may want to drop in on the predator threads and ask how to safe quard your chickens.

but wish you all the best with the hatch.

You might want to also pop in and say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out

Thank you. I'm really hoping the hatch goes well. This will be my first hatch so I've been excited since day one.
I'll be sure to check that out.
Oh that's great! I enjoy seeing and reading stories about others' flocks as well. I can already tell I made a good decision joining. Thank you for the tips.
