Hello my name is Ashley and I live in San Diego, CA but in a rural town on 3 acres. My mom had a lot of horses, goats, chickens, ducks, etc growing up but once us kids were born she stopped and we finally decided to get some more…

I really had a thing for Pekin ducks and had to have them so we bought a m/f pair 2 or 3 weeks ago when they were 3 days old (so cute!!!) They are now starting to get some feathers in and we have moved them outside since its been in the high 90’s this week.

For chickens we have 2 Barnevelder, 1 Black Australorp, 2 Barred Rocks, 1 Blue Andalusian, 1 Light Brahma, 1 Golden Polish, 1 Crele Polish, 1 White Polish, 4 Silkies (white, buff & lavender), and 1 Lavender SilkiexPolish

Tonight we are hopefully getting 6 more silkies (blue, black and patridge)

Oh and cant forget the cats and dogs… We have rescued them for the last 6 or 7 years and over the years accumulated quite a few. We have 9 cats, 3 miniature pinschers, 1 german shepherd/boxer and 1 aussie/husky. The dogs all love being around the chickens (never unsupervised) and so far we have been predator free but we do have tons of coyotes, all the birds of prey and in the past neighbors had a weasel problem. Its been over a month and so far so good. Maybe the dogs help?? Dunno…We have a huge chain link enclosure for them that is enclosed with chicken wire and in the middle there is a HUGE oak tree surrounded with honey suckle so they have more then enough shade… We do lock them up every night in there little coops (old dog houses we mounted doors onto) and all seems to be going well…

Only thing I am seeing a problem with in the future is my mom. LOL She wants to eat the eggs and doesn’t ever want to crack one open to eat and find a baby inside… Me on the other hand don’t really care for eggs and don’t eat many of them anyways I just buy them… But we don’t have a ton of $$ to make other enclosures so any tips you guys might have would be greatly appreciated… I really only want to breed the silkies and the polish….

I don’t think my mom knew what she was getting into when she gave me the okay to get chickens and ducks and she doesn’t know I am coming home with 6 more silkies tonight !!

But I am a total newbie at this, the mom and boyfriend have more experience but I am mainly the only 1 involved with the birds (I love them!!) So any tips/info would be great!!!

Thanks!
