Hi! I’m new to this website but I’m really looking forward to learning from all y’all that are chicken experts! We don’t have chickens yet but we’re getting some chicks in a couple of weeks so we need all the tips, tricks, hints and anything else for what to do. We live in the low desert (Arizona.... hot!!!) so we wont have to keep them inside too long? We have friends that have a few chickens but that’s about it so we’ll need lots of support.
Recommendations on breeds would be appreciated. We only have one place in town that sells them year round and another that sells them at Easter time. My husband and I are retired so we’re the only ones here 24/7. However we have toddler grand babies so breeds that would be good with small children would be best but not a must.
I have a large veggie garden and that’s usually where I can be found almost any time of day and sometimes night! We spend a lot of time outside and seems like we’re always working on something in our backyard. We have one dog that stays mostly outside but we plan on building a large walk-in fully enclosed area surrounding the coop and run we have. I don’t know how he’s gonna be with the chickens but I suspect he’ll wanna chase so there will be a fence between them! We live in an agricultural area and we have lots of space. We also have owls and hawks and coyotes OH MY! Hence our plan to make a large fully enclosed area! We do have a 6 ft brick fence around our yard so we’ve never had problems with coyotes or any other wild animals in our backyard but wonder if they’ll find their way (even with our dog back there??)
Found this website on a garden forum I’m in on Facebook! Any and all recommendations and suggestions are appreciated!!!
