Newbie here in Michigan

Hi All,

I am completely new to chickens and sort of impulsively bought 6 egg laying pullets from tractor supply. My three kids and I are super excited! Admittedly, I do not know a lot about chickens and a friend of mine referred me to this site. I could use any suggestions, links to threads that may be helpful, tips etc. I got 3 australorp and 3 yellow-but will be white I am told- pullets. I do have a decent size cage from a friend of mine that used to be a rabbit hutch and has plenty of room for them. The are in my garage and I am worried it may be too cold but they lived through last night and the forecast shows it will be getting warmer and last night was the last of the cold. I do have the heat lamp of course with the red bulb, bedding and waterer and feeder. But, that's about it! I am super excited and looking forward to gaining lots of knowledge from all of you chicken experts!

Hi Lori,

Those cute little chicks will grow quickly so I hope you're getting some plans made up for a coop and possibly a run. Be sure to build the coop as large as you can, crowded chickens are unhappy, crabby chickens. There are some great ideas for coops here:
