Thanks for the add. I'm looking forward to learning more about chickens and how to care for them. I found backyard chickens by searching for information on a random chick I bought.
My husband and I live on acrage in northern California . My nieghbors bought chicks from the cackle hatchery and they sent her almost DBL her order. So she asked us if we'd be interested in raising chickens. This was the begining of my chicken math lol.
I've done nothing but research for the last 8wks on chicks, breeds, coops, nesting boxes, roosting bars, runs, health, feed, etc. Every web site indirectly leads me back to the backyard chickens. After lurking I took it as a sign to join and stop lurking.
I was given 2 buff orpingtons, 2 red sex links, and 3 barred rocks (1 is a cockeral) all were 10days old.
1 of the buffs matured very fast with a bright red comb and waddles. I returned it to my neighbor as she lost one of her roos and was in need of another. We're both still unsure if it's a cockeral or a pullet but it sure looks like a roo.
Then the chicken math started... At tractor supply buying heat lamp and seen the baby fayoumis I couldn't resist their leopard print and teeny tiny bodies. So I added 6 (unsexed) more to my flock and 1 unknown breed chick. They said it was accidentally added to their order. It's black with a yellow belly, yellow around it's eyes, white tips on it's wing feathers, and feathered feet.
After researching the breed more, I realized they're not as friendly as the ones I already had. So, I purchased 2 americaunas and 2 more buff orpingtons.
My first set went out to the big brand new coop at 8 wks old. They fayoumis have 3 more weeks before they go out. My brand new buffs and EEs are only 6days old.
Today I was asked by my husband's co-worker if I'd raise 4 Rhode island reds for him lol... Why not? So this Friday I'll pick up 4 reds and add to my brooder Box.
I love sitting outside watching my silly pullets and roo. Watching them eat worms and grass and explore their new run.
