Newbie here with sad question

Um, I wasn't trying to say that the dogs would want to do it again because they've experienced it. You're right, but I do want to clarify that with time and effort you MIGHT be able to train them not to. I guess the point I was trying to make was that dogs will do that. Yes, it is the hunt/chase/kill thing to an exent. Dogs get out, birds flap and run, dog thinks that this is a fun new game. BUT I don't know how aggressively your dogs will attempt to get out again. I think I'm talking in circles here, but I hope it makes some sense.

BackToMyRoots - I'm not trying to be snarky, just trying to clarify what I meant. Not sure that I did a very good job of it.

I agree that and electric fence or some other type of barrier would be good.

Soak the birds in a ACV brine for 72 hours in your fridge this is how long it takes rigor mortis to set its coarse Unless you can kill them and clean/pluck and cook within an hour then thats ok also. Make sure the ACV (apple cider vinegar) is the organic kind with the mother in it if you chose to soak it and I am not sure the measurments for something like that But I would say aprox 20% ACV

well.. not really, I prefer the dogs guarding the chickens instead of eating them.... train the dog, and yes, it's ok to eat the chickens... if they're badly torn up, might be easier to skin them rather than pluck...

DO try to train your dogs, my Border Collie protects my chickens.

But mistakes happen. My husband forgot to lock the hen house for the first time ever 2 nights ago and the fox had 6 of my hens.....and we have had chickens for years.

We were left with just a few feathers and a badly ripped rooster (plus 6 hens he had managed to save)...but we are veggie anyway and wouldn't have eaten them (though the dog would...cooked!)

Sorry Bobbi-j, I really didn't think you were being snarky--I was just sad that the truth about dogs and chasing is what it is. Hopefully this isn't too big an interruption to the thread.

Edited to clarify: "to the thread"
I'm not quite batting .1000 on expressing myself today!
