Hello! As I'm looking into getting a couple ducks I have a question regarding egg laying. Although it would not be my main purpose in ducks I am still very curious in case it could become an interest.
How does the female know if the egg is fertile and when/if she will sit on it?
I'm sorry if this is a rather dumb question, but I'm new!

Thank you in advance!

I am not sure about that, but my ducks would start wandering off and every day lay in egg in that nest. Then they would start sitting on it. I do not think they know if the egg is fertile or not.
If you want a good egg laying breed though I recommend Black Swedish, mine is 3 years old and has laid an egg everyday since January 21
