Newbie here

Greetings and welcome to BYC Debbie! So glad you joined us. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

I have read both ends of the spectrum regarding meat birds. If you feed them to excess and allow them to grow at their max rate, they grow so fast they can't support them selves, can't fly, have heart failure, and all kinds of other issues. If you raise them like other LF birds and control their growth rate, I understand they do quite well with limited issues, primarily since you'll be processing them when they reach the appropriate size. They are not meant to breed or stay around for years. Of course it will take them a little longer to reach processing weight.

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember from this thread. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!

If you get a dual purpose breed for both meat and eggs, you can keep them together.

Something like red rangers. The cockerels are for meat and the pullets lay eggs fairly well

G’Day from down under Debbie :frow Welcome!

Thanks to the awesome advice and links already given to you, not much for me to add now except that I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Hi Debbie and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya
When I grow CX meat birds, I feed them 18% broiler mix for their entire life. I separate food, water and heat in the brooder as far apart as I can to encourage them to move. Adding a heritage layer seems to help get them moving, but I like to feed my layers 22% starter. My meat birds are in the brooder 3 weeks with 1sq foot per bird and then on pasture for 35 days. I move them every day to fresh grass and sometimes two times per day.
