Have been referring to this website for a few months and decided I needed to join! My husband and I are both from Texas, born and bred. I am able to work from home so when he retired we decided it was time to get back to our roots, leave the madness of Harris County and move to the country. In July 2017 we settled in East/Central Texas. Out of the blue, one of our new neighbors approached us and asked if we'd be interested in taking her young flock of chickens,1 rooster and 5 hens, 4 months old. She had to move ASAP and couldn't take them with her. We weren't prepared but we had been talking about raising chickens as it ran in the family, so we accepted. We purchased a small coop from Tractor Supply and moved them to our property the same weekend that Hurricane Harvey made landfall. It rained non-stop for at least a week. We actually moved their small coop under a lean to just to get them out of the rain and there they stayed until around Thanksgiving when we moved them to what my friends call a condo chicken coop. I have really grown attached to my chickens..

happy you made it through Harvey Welcome to Backyard Chickens

G’Day from down under rwilliams… :frow Welcome!

I am pleased that your flock survived Harvey.

I am also pleased that you have delurked and hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
