on them sNewbie here. .Just picked up 6 leghorns a couple of days ago. .My fear is making fried chicken outvof them..I was raised with but haven't had any for 40 + years..Had a lamp on them since they got here but not sure how to know to know if they are getting too hot. .I swear one ask me for sunscreen yesterday. ..

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Watch them.
If they are huddled under the heat source and cheeping, they are cold.
If they are as far as they can get from the heat source with their wings spread out, they are hot.
If they are running around eating and drinking and active, they are fine.
Keep the heat source only at one end of the brooder with the food and water at the other end so they can get away from the heat when they need to.
Good luck!

Hi and welcome to BYC. I’d say you chose the wrong breed for frying :D

If they are trying to get away from the lamp and are listless and panting, then they are too hot. The idea is to create a gradient of temperatures within the brooder. If you use the BYC search engine, you will find more details.

Good luck

Hello Kikkup1.
Welcome to BYC.
Have you got a coop ready for them?

They are eating and pooping fine..and they are laying some together and some are behind the food on the other end when I go check oon them .. I took some redworms in yesterday and they had a ball with them. .It just seems hot in there..
You can get a little thermometer and put it inside the brooder under the heat to see what the temp is there and then at the other end of the brooder to check the temp there.
You can also take a picture of them in their brooder and post it here.
It sounds like they are fine.
