Hi! Orpingtons should be a great breed to start with! I'm definitely a sucker for blue and black chickens. I had good luck with ordering from Meyer last year, too.

It's nice you and your husband are putting in a lot of work to get them all set up! I hope we get to hear about their progress and see pictures!

I am too. BBS birds just steal my heart every time. Next spring I want to start a flock of splash Ameraucana bantams. The coloring is just so pretty.

I will most definitely share pictures when the finishing touches are done on the coop. Just need it to not be raining or literally 100 degrees!

Hello and welcome
If you have a neighbor that is an experienced chicken owner half your battle is over especially since your coop is done.

Lean heavily on your neighbor as well as BYC for advice and watch a lot of YouTube videos. I mean a lot on different topics when it comes to chickens.

There is a barn yard full of advice out there, not all is necessarily good. You will, after watching several dozen's of videos start to find various you tube people who really know what their talking about and quickly dismiss the ones who are just parroting from one of these sources with their own twist.

I started out in your shoes back in Feb and am just now bringing it all together with my chick order in. I watched a ton of YouTube, asked a lot of questions and read a lot of stuff here in BYC.

Thank you so much! You sound a lot like me, doing the research. I've been reading online articles and things on Reddit and the like for a long time. I've also brought and read so many books on keeping chickens.

Hello! Welcome to BYC! I can attest that chicken math is real! I have been bitten by it numerous times lol! It`s all good! I have had great luck with Meyer hatchery. It helps that we are only one state away here in Indiana. I hope you have good luck with your upcoming flock! Enjoy yourself at this awesome place!

Thank you so much! My biggest concern is that our post office isn't very reliable. I'm planning to combat that by calling and being annoying when I know the shipment should be arriving, lol. That way they can't just ignore them.

Your`e welcome no problem! Postal service is a crap shoot! That is exactly what I would do call and bug them! We are kind of lucky here as we live in the heart of Amish country. I have an Amish friend who hatches out various breeds every year. In the fall I give him some apples from our small orchard then I get free chicks if I want any! Last time a couple Golden laced Wyandottes! Good luck!
