Newbie here!

Hi All,

I am about to start the adventure of backyard chickens, and I am so glad there is a place where I can start asking my million questions!!! We live in Martinez, CA east of the SF bay. We are in the learning phase - trying to decide what coop to build (my wonderful hubby is a gifted carpenter and has said he is willing... lol!) and I think I want to try orpingtons cuz I've read some and they sound fun. But?

We don't have a ton of space, just a 1/5 of an acre, but our neighbor is excited, especially when I mentioned the eggs! At the moment we have 2 dogs (Darby is an australian shepherd and the best! and Sable is a 2 yr old black lab who is a work in progress!) We also have 2 guinea pigs. Our 3 older kids are all married and we have 4 grandkids, and our daughter, Shannon still lives with us.

Any advice is welcome! If there are any out from the bay area - howdy!

Glad to have you here!
We live on about 0.2 of an acre too (in the city) - I tell you it's perfectly fine for keeping chickens! Best of luck to you! Many of our neighbours with even smaller yards have chooks in a fenced off section.
