We have had chickens for a few years, we hatched 6 chicks out in an old fish aquarium with a light bulb wanted the kids to experience this since we live on a farm.

We still have 2 of the 6 our rooster and 1 red hen not sure of the breed of either.

Last year we acquired 2 barred rock hens from a friend along with what we were told was a silkie rooster, let our hens hatch out some eggs this year and now have 18 little ones running around they are about 5 weeks old. Will be posting pics we can tell what some of them are because they look like the hens but about half of them are black so not sure what their dad is but he isn't solid black.

The silkie that we were told was a rooster is actually nesting 6 eggs right now when I went out to check on here this am she had pushed the 7th egg out of her nest assuming something is probably wrong with it. Hoping to have silkie chicks within the next week or so.

Like I said we live on a farm where we have beef cattle, goats, horses, chickens, 2 heelers an aviary in the house with our 6 cockatiels.

I'm hoping to learn lots about chickens cause until we got the first ones new absolutely nothing and now know a little more than nothing.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Sounds like you have a lovely flock of critters at your farm! Good luck with all the hatches. Mountain Peeps has you on a good path to the links for lots of good info.

Great to have you aboard and welcome to our flock!

The silkie actually hatched iut 6 of the 7 eggs all are doing very well

You sure had a lucky twist with the silkie. 9 times out of 10 when people buy one after being told that they are hens only to end up with roosters. What a turn of events that you got a hen and a great broody at that.

Was the father silkie too?
