Welcome! you'll love this area.....lots to offer especially for kids (and 4H and FFA and such)...
Ive had great luck with my Amerucana, Orpington, and Red Star hens; they are hardy breeds that weather well all season.
The Amerucana is very affectionate; there are some great resources that explain the breed's different peculiarities and gifts...plus the other hen
lovers in this group seem very willing to be honest in their disclosures about the pros and cons....none of us are too old to learn!
I found that using the large standing dog kennel panels (5x10) around my coop gave the girls a well protected area and then
we laid wire panels over the top to keep the hawks out. Local quail can get in and out of the pen too so we are helping the local
habitat in a way! Remember that although you might be in town, there are ground predators in the area occasionally, which was
why we chose the heavier kennel panels....plus they are versatile for temporary corral panels or the dogs even! if the chickens go away.
2 Labs and an Aussie find the hens entertaining...bird dogs are bird dogs, need I say more! but when the girls are reluctant to go back to
the pen and are running free in the corral and yard, the Aussie is great at helping round them up!!
Hope this helps ~ please forgive the spelling errors as its being written on the run!!
have fun!!
