Hi all, I’m a newbie. I live in Chesapeake, VA. I am still in the planning phase of my flock. I have not bought the chicks yet (which I intend on raising chicks first) but will be getting them within the next few weeks. I am still trying to design out a good run as I live in the country with lots of predators. I am a Navy Veteran, I work as an analyst now by day and own a home based bakery by night. I decided to get into chickens as they would be beneficial for a baker to have 😊🐓. I do have three large dogs though so that will be another challenge in itself and I also have two children as well. I plan on eventually getting some cows and horses as well in the future. I was browsing YouTube when the Oak Abode recommended your group for beginners. So here I am! Ready to learn and start my flock! ❤️

Welcome: It sounds like you have a good plan. Use hardware cloth around your run and coop (if not in the run) to protect from predators.

Welcome to BYC!!

Welcome to BYC! My husband is an Army vet and hates when I say this....Thank You for your service. It sounds like you are on the right track by planning ahead. We have 3 dogs that pretty big. There is only 1 we can't trust around the chickens. The German shepherd and the mutt treat the chickens like their own babies. We live out in the country as well. We make sure we dig and make a hardware cloth skirting and bury it. I hope this helps.

Welcome! I'm in the planning stage, too.
