Newbie in Homer, Alaska

Next time your in the area, give us a shout. We'll let you check out our coops. Depending on how many birds your planning on getting an automatic watering system would be appreciated by your wife for sure. Electricity to the coop is nice for everyone. During our short winter days we keep a light on a timer to keep the hens laying. You should also consider covering their run area to keep most of the rain and snow out. Rain and muck leads to sickness. We had such a rainy summer last year it was a constant struggle to keep them healthy.

Thanks for the advice. I would like to see your setup some time. I was planning on covering the run and running some form of electricity. I was also planning on insulating with blue board and putting linoleum down on the floor.

I have kept birds before in a half-baked set up and would like to do it right this time. You know where you get a few birds on a whim and then hustle to get a place for them. Just like my neighbors, I lost alot of birds to dogs with my poor setup.

You should look it up on the web. The winters are long, but the people are so nice. It is a strange mix of rednecks, greenies, artists, etc. It seems a lot of people keep chickens here. No problems finding fresh eggs.

I love it here, but my wife (from China) is a little freaked out by the lack of shopping.

My husband and I visited there before we were married.

Stayed at a little place with the cutest little cabins. It was October so everything along the spit was closed, still had a ball. My husband used to work up on the slope. He would be up there for 2 wks and home for 2 wks. Didn't last long once we were married. He still has friends that work/live up there. It was a LONG commute from here. He went to the tech school in Seward, also love that place. Ray's rocks. Fish and chips.
