In a nutshell deep litter is having a dirt floor (though I suppose you could have wood, but if it is dirt make sure nothing can dig under and up into your coop. I have hardware cloth buried beneath mine) that you keep adding bedding to over a long period of time so it's sort of composting below the chickens. Keeps the smell way down and the birds can scratch around in it looking for stuff they like. I only have to muck my coop twice a year, usually October and April. April is the worst because the little blighters spend more time inside so there's more poo. But as 1muttsfan suggested, search this site and do a google search and you'll get lots more detailed info.
