Newbie In South Louisiana

Hey there neighbor

Welcome to BYC, so nice to have ya.I'm in NE La , an hour from Monroe.
I have a couple of siblings down in BR & New Roads & tons of cousins down in Cajun Country.
Lots of nice folks here, enjoy, it's addicting.
I have a few Buff Orps & they are the sweetest chickens around.

Bayouchica,
Thanks for the warm welcome. Really enjoy this super site along with all of the wonderful people.

You are in God's country up there. I grew up in central LA and settled down here due to my job. I hate this mud and water. Rain, Rain, Rain.

I will soon have a flock about your size as of next week. 50 baby chicks (pullets) on order. Mostly all white flock with a few colors thrown in. I am an orp fan.

Do you find that orps tend to be real broody? Every flock of them I have had seems to be. They start laying in the fall and next spring half of them go broody. Who needs an incubator with them? lol They are so sweet and easy to work with.

Hurrican Rita wrecked havoc with my properties and I am still rebuilding runs and coops. I lost my entire flock due to that. We renamed this area Ritaville as a result.

Welcome to the madness here.

We are glad to have you aboard our board. I love my buff orps. I also love the "big girls" heavy brown egg layers.

I have some family in St. Francisville and BR and love Lake Charles, especially Ralph & Kakoos. YUMMMMMY.

Hi Yogiman,
So sorry to hear about loosing your flock during Rita. I do hope people are coming back & rebuilding down there.
Yeah you don't need an incubator having Buffs, they are the best mamas. There's nothing like watching a mother hen & chics. I had a couple of Buffs hatch some mallards eggs last summer. They'll hatch anything, lol.
Don't ya just love winter in Louisiana ? We're finally getting the steady stream of moisture from the gulf, it's muddy up this way too. It's up to 70 today & then it's back down to the 50's for the high.
Again nice to have ya here, Miriam

Hi Yogiman if I step out of my travel Trailer and give a shout you would hear me. I also live just west of Sulphur. Right out of the city limits. we are also rebuilding. We did live in Cameron right on the coast. I miss hearing the Gulf at night when we slept with the windows open. We where only a mile or less from the gulf. So we lost everything. House, three barns, feed shed, over 100 show birds,7 goats and 150 show rabbits. But live goes on so we moved to Sulphur and are trying to build a house. If the rain would stop for a few day a could get some dirt hauled to finish my foundation and pour my slab. After my house is done I will do my coops and get back into chicken. For now I go visit my brother to get my chicken fix. Glad to know that chicken people are in the city.

Hey Hiddenmagnolia,

Wow, small world. Hey neighbor! Just shout out, I'm listening for you. Actually I live on 3 acres out here in Carlyss just south of the Dollar Store Mall and the world famous Fisherman's Headquarters. Now don't tell me you don't know where Fisherman's is.

Yeah, Rita was a b_ _ _ h! I had damage but nothing compared to you poor guys. I am still repairing and rebuilding 2 years later. I retired because of that. It's the only way I was able to get anything done around here.

And the rain! I am so sick of this mud and water. I am trying to fence my property to pasture my hens. It's hard to dig post holes with mud and water flying up in your face. I think I'll have to prop some of the posts up or put sinkers on them to keep them in the ground. And more rain coming tomorrow.

Hey, look me up in the phone directory or e-mail me and let's get to know each other. Better yet, you can come to my chicken ranch and I'll show you how poor folks live. lol Plus you could get your a fresh mess of greens and some homemade yard eggs. You can't beat an offer like that with a stick.

Stay in touch and best wishes on building your house. I too need to haul some more sand and dirt but I have to wait for the next drought to do that. Either that or I just need to build some levees around this mud hole and raise rice or crawfish. I got at least 10 thousand crawfish mounds out there right now.

Gotta go now. Hope to hear from you soon.

Fishmen corner of Dave Dugas and main highway from Hackberry. Across from Cameron Comm. We lived in the parking lot(Cameron Com.) in a Fema cracker box for over a year. we where the one with the dog kennel in front of it. We finally found ten acre we could afford we had no insurance. We where putting three kids through higher ed. so we could not afford house ins. any more. But we are rebuilding one box of nails at a time. Try to find all of the bargains that I can. We where next door neighbor and did not know it small world.

We are near Shreveport Louisiana. We just joined backyard chickens because we have decided to get some chickens. What is the best way to get a few Buff Orpingtons?
