Newbie in WV, interested in quail

There are color varieties of Japanese COturnix Quail but they are all the same bird...

Yes they are all the same birds, but you can only feather sex Jumbos and Manchurians. If you don't get one of these you will have to vent sex at a different age. If you want some cool looking birds that are still very efficient I would order some mixed eggs. You will have to vent sex, but it isn't hard once you learn how to do it. Once again they are the same bird, but some can be sexed at an earlier age so you can start your meat pen. If this is what you want I would get some Jumbo Browns.

First off I'd like to say this is the best forum that I have ever been on, most others you would have to wait days to get as much info as I have in the last hour. You guys and girls are great. I did forget to mention though that colony raising is a must because my states DNR says that gamebirds if keep in the same cage for more than 30 days need a minimum of 100 sq. ft. for 5 birds and an additional 20 sq. ft. for each bird over the first 5, and it has to be 6 feet tall. I know that is much greater than what most say is needed, but thats the law. The offspring however, I plan on raising in smaller cages, moving them to a slgihty larger cage every 30 days, until they are large enough to be eaten.

By the way how long does it take Coturnix to mature enough to:
1. lay eggs
2. be big enough to eat

Have you checked to verify that coturnix must have those conditions? Because they are not native to the US they often have different regulations from other types of quail.

If you shared what state you live in folks who live in your neck of the woods might know more about the situation (if there are any in your area).

I don't know the cage requirements but quail are quail as far as WV is concerned. There has been new law written in the past few years that took all quail under the same laws. So I'm sure the OP is correct in there statement.
