What a great resource BYC is! I've read & read some more & been enabled.

Love the pictures of everyone's chickens and coops!

Received an awesome assortment of eggs from Jody and I'm now on....Day 2!!?? Seems they should be pipping by now, these days are going slowwwwwwww!

Ummm, better look at the temp in the incubator again for the 100th time this morning.

Oh no, Katy - it's not a typo!

Yes, this is going to be a long 3 weeks. I know - I'll get away from the incubator for awhile for a trip to Tractor Supply!

The temps & humidity have been right on for over a week now. I did set it up a week early just to watch the egg turner go back & forth

- it looks so much better filled with beautiful eggs!

I'm also finishing up day 2 tonight. I find myself staring at the digital thermometer, too. I think my eyes are experiencing something similar to computer monitor burn-in. I'm starting to see a negative image of the shape of the white styrofoam incubator.

What are the possibilities in your assortment of eggs? How many eggs are you hatching?

Thanks Jody! Hope you'll be gramma to a bunch of beautiful chicks...in 19 days and counting down!

Donald, I have 34 eggs in the bator and of course I'm hoping for all of them!! I'm going to candle on Day 7 &

I have an assortment of Araucanas, Buff Orp, RIR, SLW & Blk Australorp - and 1 EE! I got them from hinkjc who posted some pics of her chickens the other day - take a look, they're be-u-ti-ful!

What have you got going on in your bator? How many eggs/breeds, etc? This is my first hatch, I'm much more excited than I thought I'd be this early on!

I just finished day 3 and yes, time is going really slow. I have 9 eggs in my homemade bator. (that's all that will fit too

) They are RIR's I guess it's too soon to start asking how to tell the roos from the pullets.

I've got 12 assorted Silkie eggs (6 in the incubator, 6 under a broody buff cochin bantam who is a surrogate hatcher). It all started with getting fertile eggs to make the broody hen, Betty, happy. Betty is small and it's her first time as mom. So, I thought why not try half in an incubator in case she quits her job without notice. I got these eggs from nearby Lisa, a.k.a. Dipsy Doodle Doo. So the eggs are fresh and no shipping required.

Anyway, it was a good excuse to buy an incubator.

Regardless of how this incubation turns out, I feel obligated to use the incubator again in the spring to get my money's worth out of it. Yes, it's a slippery slope of rationalization for more chickens.

I already have 11 laying hens (9 are virgins, so no fertile eggs) in Red Sex Links, Black Sex Links, Americaunas, one Barred Rock. Then I've got 3 cochin bantams (2 roos, and Betty). Lastly 2 OEBs (1 roo, 1 hen). The OEB Red Pyle Roo is the photo for my avatar. It's a motley, yet happy, crew.

Donald, I love your rationalization for hatching more! Gotta make the investment good

Read your blog - you've got a lot going on and your knitting is gorgeous! You've got some pretty chicks there & good luck with your hatch too!

LoneCowboy, yep, I'm thinking the same thing! How many roos do I have?! Trying to enjoy every day (as the egg turns;) ) as I know they'll grow up waaaaay too fast. Someone here posted a link to embryo development and it's fascinating how fast they develop in the egg. Good luck with your hatch also & I'll be watching for both of your posts for updates! Who will get a pip first?!
