I started raising coturnix quail after I was given an incubator earlier this year and saw eggs for sale. I got some info off the internet, but it wasn't until 10 of the 12 eggs hatched that I realized I needed more info. I lost 2 after they drowned in water that was in a thin lid. That's when I learned my baby brother had raised Coturnix when he was younger. He told me to leave chicks in the incubator for 24 hours without food or water, and then to add small gravel or marbles in the water container.
My 2nd hatch didn't do nearly as well, having 5 hatch ....about 30% rate. This was the same weekend we buried my cousin, so I gave each chick a letter from his name.
After my first white quail died after being pecked terribly by a Male, I decided to try to hatch as many of her eggs as possible which I narrowed down to two egg types. I didn't realize that after several days, the egg turner had been unplugged. Only one egg hatched and it was a mix of white and the browns most coturnix have. I feel terrible when I lose one, and wonder at times if I should continue or not. I would like to add TX A & M quail though.
My hobbies include photography & gardening. We have 2 rescue cats, 5 rescue dogs, 2 horses,
and fish. We're also busy with soccer.
I'm not sure how I found BYC, but I appreciate the honest answers without attacking the person asking questions.
