I live in a pretty layed back part of a growing city. I used to live on a large mountain with an evergreen forest with over sixty chickens. And about six roosters or so. That was my mother's farm.
But that did not work out for us. Most of the people were only there for vacations. So us and a couple neighbors had to do all the maintenance by ourselves. Snow plowing, removing rocks from the dirt road, weed removal and prevention. All of it. And then it turned into a type of creepy cult on there making it impossible to homestead.
Anyway! "I'm back in the city and here to stay" (Hamilton Reference). And it's been two years now without any chickens. Just three days ago I decided to start a three chicken flock in my dad's backyard. I've had the chicks two days now.
I am used to using old "no veterinarian needed" ways to treat and own chickens. The nearest vet from our little farm was at least 50 miles or so. So we had to make do with what we had. But we definitely vaccinated our birds. Right off the bat on our mountain we had a Newcastle outbreak. So that definitely destroyed our idea of a drug free flock. We definitely got on board with vaccines and antibiotics.
I was a bit put off when I learned yesterday that antibiotics are mostly off the market for chickens in Washington. Especially since I lost a chick to a mysterious something. Might of just been Starve Out, might of been a respiratory disease, or it might of been Merik's. Now I would have to track down a vet that will practice on chickens in a city that is not into farming. Luckily a couple towns over we have 4H and farm heaven. But it would be a horrible drive and experience for the chicks. But hey. At least less experienced people can't abuse the antibiotics I guess... *sigh* ok. Sorry for the ranting. That was random. But it gives you a taste of my personality Lol
