Hi, everyone! I am so thankful to have found this forum just in time to start a backyard flock! I have discovered so many great ideas and tips just by clicking through links on Pinterest that nearly always brought me to this site :)

We are getting ready to purchase our first chicks and I have done a lot of research here & decided it was about time I actually joined!

My daughter has a small flock at her house & I can't wait to have one of my own. :)

Welcome to byc!! Glad you are thinking about starting a new flock!!! I do have to say that I would wait until next spring to get new chicks. If you get them now, they wouldn't be fully grown for winter (I think they they should be fully/ almost fully grown because winter can be pretty harsh and unforgiving). You can also just put a heat lamp in but even then you would have to run electricity out to the coop which would be even more work. That's just my opinion.

It's nice to hear BYC has already been helpful to you. If you haven't already, check out some of the great articles in the Learning Center:

What breed of chicks are you getting?

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. There is a ton of information available and a lot of friendly, helpful members.

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. A lot of us were lurkers before joining. :o) X2 on NorthFlChick; if you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center. Thanks for the warm welcome!!! We are Planning to run electricity to the coop, gonna start very small with only 3-4 chicks. I want Buff Orpingtons and perhaps Barred plymouth rocks.

I debated waiting until spring, and still may do so, depending on what chicks are going to be at RK. (They are getting a shipment tomorrow) I figure if we can get the coop heated, we should be ok. Hoping to find a flat wall panel heater.

In the meantime, I am all about preparing, lol! There is so much good info here!

You're welcome. I raised numerous BOs and BRs over the years and they are both great breeds; very cold hardy and good layers of large, brown eggs. Both breeds in general are typically docile and the Buff Orpingtons in particular are very calm and gentle. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) made lap pets of ours.
