My chickens are about 8 months old right now and it's getting pretty cold here in north east Ohio. I have 22 chickens and it only looks like one of them is just beginning to molt. I was wondering when they usually molt? I was under the impression that they would all be molting around this time of year but I guess I was mistaken...? If anyone knows when please let me know! We get nasty winters here and I don't want my babies to me naked!

They probably won't molt this year, as they are pullets. I've had a few go through a minor molt at 9 months, but not a hard molt. And even if they drop a lot of feathers, they'll be fine and snuggle up to the ones with feathers - and they grow them in pretty fast.

Mine did not molt the first year. They were born last spring are just molting now.

I hear they usually molt in the late summer, although I've had mine years and none of them have ever molted. Must be the Australian weather, messing around with their mechanisms.
