Hi, I'm just about to enter the world of keeping chickens but the more I read about disease and infestation the more worried I become. Are red spider mites a horrendous problem for most people. I'm happy to dedicate a lot of time to my new birds but dintcwantvthem taking over my life completely!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

When digging deeper into chicken health, it really can seem intimidating and scary! But most illnesses are uncommon and most are easy to treat.

Spider mites are not common. Make sure you flock can dust bathe daily. Here is a link on lice and mites also

Good luck to you!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

As Mountain Peeps has suggested, all these diseases may seem intimidating at first. Just keep a close eye on your flock so that you an tell of a bird is a bit off and you can get a jump start on healing them. Keep your coop clean and it never hurts to dust your coop floors, nest boxes and roost bar (on top and bottom) once a month with DE. This is a natural product that will help keep the mites out of the coop.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. Welcome to our flock!

Glad you joined us!

I haven't found red mites to be much of a problem, especially if you keep the coop clean and check your birds regularly for the first signs of infestation.

We're glad to have you.

I've never had a problem with Red Mites. As long as you clean the coop regularly and your birds are relatively stress-free, you shouldn't have problems with them.

Welcome to BYC -- you may be surprised how that bolded bit might evolve over time

- even if it doesn't, though, the good news is that for the most part chicken keeping is not something that *has* to take over your life, it just has a way of doing it (but in a good way).
