Just wondering if there is any no dakers here that could help me out. I live in fargo and want to have chickens that lay eggs and maybe some to eat. I have no clue where to start with this. I ordered a book off amazon and just waiting for its arrival. Any tips or clubs that I can join here would be really helpful. thank you

Three of the best dual purpose chicken breeds in my opinion would be buff orpingtons, black austrlorps, and New Hampshire reds. They are all brown eggs layers, but are just as good as the others. Note- Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps are large breeds, so if there is not much space and you plan on keeping quite a few of them, I would reccommend the New Hampshire Reds.

thank you for your response, i was loosely planning on having around 5-7 chickens. When I first get started egg laying will be my primary goal. I haven't built a coop yet but I plan on doing it myself so it should be spacious.

You should put the coop before the chicken .Go to forums coop design and start thinking about it . Take weather year round into consideration when you design your coop. Learn the predators domestic and wild around where you live build coops and runs to keep those out of your chickens . Raising chickens is easy if you are prepared. Also in forums is chicken breeds look through them so you have a ideal of what is what .We're all chicken nuts here ask any question anytime and someone will give you a answer might not be the right one .But not to worry someone else will give you their opinion too . So build a coop get feeders and waters and go get some chickens and become a chicken slave

If you are just wanting eggs at the time and have limited space, I would greatly recommend the white leghorn breed. They should begin laying around 4.5-5 months, and they lay large white eggs. I recently sold 35 of my chickens and replaced them with 6 white leghorns. They lay extremely well, and I am planning on investing in more breeds of leghorns. (Brown, Buff, Black, Red, Exchequer)
