Hi all
I'm brand new on BYC!
I'm from North West England, I'm 26 and currently 6 months off finishing a veterinary nursing qualification. Due to my job, I often have a lot of birds (and other wildlife) brought into work and I'm usually the "go-to" fosterer! I think last year we rehabbed and released around 14 wild birds and 1 hedgehog. Our latest foster is slightly different....
He was found in a bin in the town centre, with a few wounds and some bruising. A bit of research told us he (?) was an English Modena pigeon. Very beautiful. A few days in the surgery saw him eating really well and showing us just exactly how much he appreciated it, with wing slaps and growls! I'm now aware that Modenas have a rep for being aggressive and bolshy - he is just fantastic.
We have been trying to find owners to no avail (no ID) via social media etc but nobody has come forwards for him - so we have (99%) decided to keep him as he is such a lovely looking bird and has such a character!
We just want to do our homework on him to give him the best life possible - he is currently in a German Shepherd sized dog crate, in the conservatory (with doors and windows open as much as possible) with natural perches and is eating a mix of wild bird seed/pigeon corn, with oyster shell grit and greens like lettuce and spinach. He is drinking and eating exceptionally well and up and down off his perches quite happily

I have experience of feeding/care/medical attention with wild pigeons but never a fancy pigeon. He does have lice (C. columbae I think) - again, after a bit of research and recommendations, we have treated him with a permethrin water-based spray.
So, mainly to say HELLO! And I'm looking forwards to finding out lots more about keeping birds. I'm 100% open to help/advice/suggestions! (I am just searching old posts on this too!)
