Hello everyone,

I'm new to owning ducks, and my newest Muscovy duck which we bought as company for my other Muscovy has started to cough and I'm worried about her. I've done some simple research on caring for ducks so I know the general basics, but I'd like some second opinions on her.
I'll list her symptoms and other information down below, along with recent photographs of her:

  • Around 7-8 months of age.
  • Female.
  • Wet sounding cough, happens during feeding time and before feeding time. She eats mixed corn and duck pellets.
  • No discharge from eyes or nose.
  • She free roams on a large pond with other ducks and wildlife, including fish.
  • Limping - she's done this for a while now, ever since we got her, so this may be something else entirely. She's very "waddly". She can still run.
  • Scruffy, broken looking feathers, especially around the end of the wings and the tail, although I'm not sure if they look this way because she is still young.

Thank you in advance,
Blue

She's pretty.
My muscovies are 13 weeks and have some scruffy feathers at the end of their flight feather tips. Well, the wing that I didn't trim looks a little scruffy. I trimmed the other flight feather on each duck so that they can't fly.
Not sure about the coughing. Can you take a video? If so, it has to be uploaded to YouTube, Facebook, vimeo, etc before it can be embedded here.
Is your other duck coughing at all?
As far as the limping, have you checked for bumblefoot?

Thank you! :)

Weirdly enough she can't fly... either that or she doesn't know how to.
She was kept in small enclosures before we got her for over 2 months, barely enough room for flying. But surely a duck would know how to fly?

I'll try take a video as soon as possible and post it this week. I'm keeping a close eye on her. Still no discharge.

Other Muscovy is fine, they were inseparable at first but now they kind of just do their own thing. There's been a bit of feather pecking and even mounting from the younger one, I honestly thought I'd picked up a male because of her behavior but I am 110% sure they are both female!
I just assume they've had some disagreements, they have other ducks to mingle with in the meantime. (Call ducks and wild Mallards)
Not checked for bumble foot but have had a quick look as she's walking and haven't seen anything popping out at me. I want to try catch her and fully examine her, but Muscovies are such a pain to catch and handle when they don't want to be. :hmm

I totally agree with your last statement!
Muscovies can get too heavy to fly. And, even if they aren't too heavy once they get older it is more of a jump and soar than a flight. Bumblefoot would most likely be on the bottom pad of the foot. But, she could have something else going on.
Apparently ducks will "mate" regardless of the gender for dominance.
Sounds like she is in a good place now. Hope you figure out the cough.
