I think I may need an intervention. I have been wanting chickens for over ten years. But we lived in a subdivision that did not allow chickens. I dreamed of having a small piece of land for my horses where I could raise chickens for eggs. Last year my husband and I found a perfect piece of land and a gorgeous house. FINALLY! I got my coop in January and my chickens in March (1 leghorn, 1 blue Andalusian, and 5 Golden buff sex link) . And ever since I got them I have been obsessed. Reading books, magazines and, of course, joining Backyard Chickens.

Initially I was wanting chickens to get organic eggs without all the hormones. There was no way I was getting attached to a bird. I did not realize how much fun they are. Each has a different personality and they are so fun to watch. I could sit outside and watch them all day. Finding eggs in the nesting boxes is the highlight of my day! Why didn't anyone tell me they were so cool?

I'm already looking at another coop and would like to get another flock next spring. My husband thinks I'm crazy.
Yes maybe I am. None of my city friends or coworkers understand and I think they are sick of me taking about my girls.

Does this obsession ever go away? I'm afraid I'm going to be the lonely chicken lady.

Thanks for fueling my obsession Backyard chickens.

LOL

You will never be the lonely chicken lady, that's what we are for. I love my leghorns, and I sell other breeds also like the blue Andalusian. They make good friends. They are like dogs in the way that they are always happy to see you. The next thing you'll have to do for us is post more pictures. I am happy for you. J.D.

FORTUNATELY the obsession most likely won't go away. If you love your chickens and enjoy them for more than just the eggs, then so be it. Keep telling your stories to your friends and co-workers. I do the same. What are "obsessed chicken ladies" supposed to do? Keep all the fun stories to ourselves? NOT!!! LOL! I went through the same thing as you. I started out with 4 and last spring and now I have about 30, maybe more. But that includes the ducks and geese too! You just wait... if you have a roo you may think about hatching out your own babies for next spring. Now that is fun and very rewarding. I have three eggs in the incubator right now. One hatched

this morning, the other has started pipping and one goose egg due on the 16th. I can't wait for that little guy.

So my advice to you is to keep telling your stories, enjoy your flock and the eggs too. Everyone has their own obsession. Good luck to you!

Hi Tucksmama...you took the words right out of my mouth. My obsession started in Mothers Day: two months after we found our "dream property.

I have young mixed flock right now. But, just ordered my first mail-order chicks: Jersey Giant flock wll be here in August.

Cheers! Wendy.
