Hello Dee here I live in the Northeast . I apologizes for the long introduction, but I want you to understand why I have only one rooster
I’m new to the chicken world I was planning on getting chicken in the future like maybe next summer however last Sat I was hiking with my dogs and someone dumped a rooster in the woods. Not sure ow long he was how there, the night before it was snowing and cold and the poor rooster looked wet and cold with a lost look. I’m told his comb had frost bite on it but nothing major. Anyway I left the rooster with some dog treats took my dogs home came back with my brother and a carrier and a little food my neighbor loaned me. The rooster was actually pretty friendly we put food down reach down and pick him up with little struggle. Sat afternoon I thought I had a home for Mr rooster on a small farm, the farmer said Mr rooster was a cross between RI Red and something else, maybe around 6 months old or less. The farmer wanted a pure breed but did say the rooster had good disposition and would be a great bird for starting out. So Mr rooster came back home with us, we settled him in for the night in our shed. Sunday morning I emailed people called people trying to find a home for him but most people already had enough rooster’s. Basically what I was told it’s a bad time of a year to try and introduce a rooster. Ok no takers it’s around 9:00 Am Sunday morning I started call all around trying to find a temp coop. We are so unprepared for this guy. Finally found one a local Agway they had one in stock , picked it up and off loaded it at the house then headed back into town to Tractor supply bought a chicken pen, by 4:30 MR rooster had a nice little coop. and safe area to stretch . Mr Rooster is now called Jed Clampett went from rags to riches. Not only is Jed going through a big adjustment I have (3) dogs and (2) cats that will be welcoming him into his family. My neighbor has chickens my dogs don’t even bat an eye when there around, however this is different we have a new resident. As things settle down Jed will have more freedom and be able explore his new surroundings when I’m home. He will have some hens but not sure when. Until then he has us. So that’s were at. I’m hoping to learn about chickens and the responsibilities that go with it. My goal is to raise my rooster healthy as close to natural rearing as possible.
