Newbie to Chickens-excited to get started!

Greetings!
My small family of three have recently decided the chicken life may be for us. We have an acreage with 3 horses and two dogs and I've been around animals all of my life. I'm enthusiastic about teaching my young son animal husbandry, but the horses are still a little too much for him. Also, him and I LOVE EGGS! so we are pretty pumped.

We live in the Northern area of Canada, so we see some pretty chilly winters for most of the year.
We have yet to build our coop. We are thinking a coop and tractor as we have about 1 acre for the chickens to move around on, but we have many predators including our dogs. Thanks for a warm welcome and I can't wait to dive in.
