Newbie to Incubating - And the hatching begins!!!

Down to 24

I candled over the weekend (early I know, but I couldn't wait). So far so good, but I found another cracked while candeling. Before I tossed it, I opened it to see how far the development was. Nice webbing of vains on top of the yolk with a spot in the center of the vain web. I got so excited

cause I wasn't certain if all the eggs were fertil, but it seems they are. Also, I could see a faint blood ring on several others.

This is my first hatch so if I get 50% hatched, I will be very pleased, anything over 50% will be gravy!

yippie that you are seeing growth. Sorry you had the cracked egg. I candled like 5 times on my first hatch, (hatched Mar 1,) and I never knew exactly what I was seeing ... only that I saw something getting darker and darker.

This time I only have a few eggs light enough to candle so I will do those on day ten and if they are good that will be the last time I candle before lockdown.

Yipppie... just wait. 3 weeks goes quickly.

You should of kept the cracked egg. You can put unscented white candle wax on it and it should be fine and still hatch.

Hey there, I am new myself, I put my 2nd batch in on 3/3 also. My first was a disaster, I lost all but one and he is still in his membrane as we speak. I dont think he will make it but as long as he is still moving I keep faith. I think the cold weather we had during shipment was the cause. I will be right alog there with you on this one though. Its very nervewracking at the end, this I can attest to. GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the tip! I will remember that next time.

I only found that out this weekend. I read in someone's thread about it and then it just happened that we needed to do that this weekend.

I have 2 bators going right now. My friend Babylady4 (BYC member) is near me and is hatching eggs in her bator for me too. And I have my own bator going. We were candling at her house this weekend and she accidently dropped her flashlight right on the eggs. 2 cracked right on the air sac. Oh, she was so upset. But I told her it happens. No biggy. This is what we need to do to fix it. They are still wiggling and doing this.....

So they should be just fine.

The other thing I should say is that it only works if they are not leaking. Only cracked.

After candeling last night I found 4 eggs that were not fertil, clear with no vains or spots. 20 showed the vains and the small embryo. I wasn't sure if any were fertil so I'm happy. Guess this is all par for the course eh?

Good luck -I will be setting next week it will be my first with an incubator - I did hatch at 100 % under a broody before but hopefully I can do as well as she did
