Newbie to Incubation

I am wondering to how the chick is doing. Did it make it through the night?

She made it through the night and was chirping away when we left for the lake. Still wasn't completely dry so when we get home I'll put her in the brooder. Still concerned about the protrusion on her butt! Someone said it might be a prolapse. What do I do, can she survive?

I am glad she made it through the night and showing signs she's doing good.
You went to the lake and didn't take me... OH NO... lol

Missi that's is a question for the medical team here on the site to answer. https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/10/emergencies-diseases-injuries-and-cures

Its when the vent organs are outside and not inside the body I believe. I am not sure what you can do about it. They would be the one to answer that for you.

Sorry about the lake.... I'm burnt to a crisp and was only out there a few hours! I put her in the brooder box,she drank water, ate and is chirping up a storm when I walk in the room and start talking to her!! I've posted there but no one has told me what they think it is.

Ouch sounds like you maybe hurting from all that sun today. I think its may take a bit for them to read all the things going on over at the Emergency forum and get back to everyone. So have you given her a name yet since she is now in the brooder? When you took her out did you get to look at the other eggs to make sure there was no other pips or peeps coming from them.

No name yet, not sure how to tell if it's a boy or girl...Lol just keep calling it she lol....No pips or peeps from the other 2 eggs that I can see or hear. It's been 25 days. Should I through them out or what should I do?

Missi at day 25 give it another day or so, but I think I would try this: at day 27 or 28 giving them just a few more days to hatch. Make sure there are no cracks or pips first other wise you drown the chick.

Many Folks Are Having Eggs Go Overdue For Hatch And Wondering If They Are Duds, Late, Or Have Had Some Sort Of Fetal Demise.... The Float Test Is Simple Yet Effect Way Of Checking Egg Viability.

I Normally Give Eggs A Full 24 Hrs Overdue Before Float Testing. It Works On All Bird Eggs- Period! Takes Very Little Equipment Or Time To Do And Is Easy To Perform.

Start With A Bowl Of Sufficient Depth To Allow The Eggs Your Testing To Float Freely Or Sink. Add 100 Degree Water To The Needed Level And Allow It To Settle( Quit Swirling And Calm Down)

Once Settled Take The Egg Or Eggs To Be Tested And Gently Lower Them Into The Water With As Little Disturbance As Possible. You May Need To Wait A Few Minutes For The Water To Settle Again After Adding Egg/ Eggs. Then Just Watch....

Eggs Are Judged By Observation With Results As Follows:

1. Sinker= Dud, Never Developed

2. High Floater (like A Fishing Bobber Without Weights) Say 45% Or More Of The Egg Above The Water Line= Dud, No Development Or Fetal Demise, Likely Rupture Of Internal Membranes Causing The Egg To Dehydrate.

3. Low Floater= Viable Egg, Development Full Term

4. Low Floater Rockin And Rollin! This Is The Live Embryo Moving Inside The Egg= Definate Viable Egg!

Once Test Results Complete Take Viable Eggs And Gently Pat Dry And Replace In Hatcher. Duds Are Best Discarded At This Time.

It Should Be Noted All Eggs Warrant Close Inspection Prior To Float Testing--- Any Pips In The Shell? Do Not Float Test! If The Shell Is Broken, Pipped Or Cracked In Any Way Water May Enter And Drown The Chick Inside

This Test Works Off Of Air Cell Development With Embryo Growth. Infertile Eggs Will Have An Underdeveloped Or Absent Air Cell That Isnt Large Enough To Float The Egg....thus The Sinkers. Ruptured Membranes Will Allow The Egg To Dehydrate.... Thus The High Floater. Proper Development Of The Embryo Will Cause The Air Cell To Develope To The Point Where Viable Eggs Will Float With Approximately 10-15% Of The Egg Above The Water Line--- These Are The Viable Eggs. Obvious Movement Of The Egg Shows Signs Of Life For The Chick Within. Works On All Bird Eggs.

Just the air cell was above water. I don't hear no peeps or feel any movement. I'm pretty sure they died in the shell. Do I will discard tomorrow, clean the Bator and start again. Lil one is doing well, egg sac still not absorbed. What should I do? She's drinking water but I haven't seen her eat. Had to clean her bottom started getting pasty butt. HELP!

I just went and checked on lil one, since I hadn't heard chirping in about and hour. She/he was laying on her side. I don't know if she's going to make it. I don't know what else to do! Worried right now!

Missi have you tried the hard boiled egg yolk and electrolyte at all? Make some home made electrolyte and let it cool. You may find she may take a little on her beak from you or you can use a eye dropper. Just place a tiny drop on her beak and see if she will take any. Make sure your finger is clean and dip it in the electrolyte and place it on her beak. Give her some right away after you get it cooled. Mash up the yolk of a hard boiled egg and try giving it to her. They may both help her. Do one and if you see improvement the do the other.

Home made Electrolytes
1 gal water
1 Teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon Sugar

Boil water and other ingredients and mix well let cool

I tried the mushed up boiled egg yolk, she would not eat it. I just seen this post for some reason I never got a notification or I would've made the electrolytes. Unfortunately, my sweet lil baby passed sometime yesterday after I left for work. When my hubby text me I was sick to my stomach. I had tried to feed her repeatedly over the last few days, She would drink the sugar water, and was even told to use raw egg yolk and water, she ate that the 1st day, but refused to anything else. I don't know what could've happened, other than her lungs were not fully developed since she hatched from the wrong end, on top of the egg sac not being fully absorbed before hatching. It did get smaller, but never absorbed entirely. My husband, being the sweet, loving, caring man that he is, promptly buried her before I got home so that I wouldn't have to see her. Will be setting more eggs on Monday 5/8/2017. Leaving to go camping on Wednesday 5/3/2017 and didn't want to have the incubator running when no one was going to be home for 5 days. I wish I knew if I did something wrong before the at hatch. I will just be more diligent and get all my information from everyone here and not from my incubator instructions! Thank you so much for all the help and vast wealth of knowledge! Everyone has been amazing!
