Hi all, we are going to take the plunge and get a few chicks, as pets and for eggs. I was leaning towards Orpingtons after reading the info on BYC, seems like a good breed for a beginner. I found a guy on Craig's list who has blue, black, and buff, and I thought it would be fun for the kids if we had different colors, but I wanted to make sure all the colors had the same easy going personality that the buffs have. Appreciate any opinions, thanks in advance!

It depends. I have heard folks talk about how flighty and crazy their orps are. Typically these are hatchery bred birds that end up this way, or if improper selections are made by a breeder. I find temperament to be heritable and select my breeders based on this as one of the many factors in who carries on breeding lines. A lot is also dependent on how much time you spend with your birds, interact with them and handle them while they are growing.

eta - I have buff, black and white and all of them have excellent temperaments. My lavenders are also showing terrific personalities as well. I fully expect my mottled and jubilees to be the same, but that will be dependent on me.

I have a 8 week old blue chick that wants me to pet him everytime I put my hand in the cage. He is so cute. Not all of them in the cage are as friendly right now but I find all mine to be fairly gentle and will eat out of your hand if you spend time with them.

My blues have are all drama queens, although my roo, who is 23 weeks old, is now much friendlier than he was as a chick. He will come up for treats, but doesn't want me to touch him. The little girls scream bloody murder everytime I pick them up - but I think with work and time they will settle down also.
