I don't know if it "worked" - maybe the law of averages was just on her side. Anyway, if the needle swung a certain way, it was a rooster, if the needle swung another way, it was a hen. She was a bit secretive about it, since she did not want anybody from the store watching her. She did assure me that this was not a guarantee, that the chicks could still be roos.
