I am from South Africa, and became interested in raising chickens for meat and eggs for the extended family about a year ago. Jumping in with all four feet, I bought an 180 egg incubator (over the top, i know), and then proceeded to try and find anyone who would give me eggs to incubate. The first batch were a mish mash of larger bantam type chickens, which I had a relatively decent hatching from, but the subsequent Bosvelders were awful, and I literally only got 4 or 5 from each hatching of over 100 eggs (I think it was the handling and storing of the eggs from the person who was giving them to us). We sadly decided to stop incubation over winter, raise the chickens we had hatched, and then try again with our own eggs. As I also love novelty, so besides the autosexing and sex link, I have also become very interested in "coloured" eggs, but I think i will leave that for later. I currently have a flock of 10 silkies, 2 australorp hens, 11 bosvelder hens & 2 roosters, and 14 mixed breed hens (one of which has the most gorgous green and purple feathers all over), and 1 rooster.
