Help!!!
I have four baby chicks I got from a feed mill. I got chicks for more of a hobby than anything and just wanted egg layers. The guy at the mill sold me four chicks all female. I still do not understand how I get eggs without them needing a rooster. Can someone please explain to me?
I feel like an idiot!
Thanks

Most females ovulate (release an egg, weather it's a human inside or a chicken outside) regardless of a male being present or having intercourse/mating. If you have no rooster, your eggs will not be fertile and could not be brooded to develop baby chicks. If you do have a rooster, the eggs will be fertile. Still good to eat, no difference, but if a hen sits on (broods) them for a week or so straight, night time included, they'll start to develop baby chicks.

I know of lots of women who wish they didn't ovulate just because there's no man around!

Welcome to byc. And you don't need a rooster to get eggs....but you do if you want them to hatch. Hens will lay with or without a rooster. :)

The hen will go through the process of producing the egg whether there's a rooster round or not. A rooster's only needed to fertilise the eggs that the hen produce.

donrae:

Anyhow, :welcome
Don't feel dumb asking questions like that, everyone has to begin somewhere! :)

Thank you that makes sense! I appreciate all of my fellow BYC's knowledge!!
Sincerely,
