I want layers, eventually (I'm sorry) they will be table birds as well. We like to be self-sustaining, my husband has hunted all his life. Our primary red protein is venison; we harvest 2-3 deer annually and do our own butchering. Buy our pork and lamb on the hoof from a local farm and have a decent vegetable garden so it's not just a hobby but how we like to live. There are no small children, ours are all grown and out of the coop! We live in Chesapeake City, MD so upper eastern shore with humid but not relentless hot summers, moderate rainfall, and moderate winters. We do get some snowfalls but our averages are well below the northeast.

Also, our coop will be very secure but we want a run as well. We have a unused dog run, about 6'x10', made of cyclone fencing about 8' high. We'd like to re-purpose this for a day-time only run for the flock. We will add a wire roof. Can anyone think of why this is a bad idea or suggest how we can re-purpose it to make it safer for the girls?

Thanks so much.
