I've never had Buff Orpingtons myself, but have heard that they are good egg layers that are very docile. I've had one Rhode Island Red (actually, a hatchery Production Red). She's been a very good layer, though hasn't been quite as personable as some of my other birds.
 
Maybe if there had been a website called "Raising Backyard vegetables you would have succeeded." Luckily there is a BACKYARD CHICKENS -with information to get you from start to finish and all places in between.
