Why do cats only last 6 months there?

(all barn cats) Some just disappear and or a opossum will move in and I don't notice it. Hawks or owls will pick em off. My latest favorite was killed when our garage door squashed her. That was last fall and I haven't gotten over that one as she was my favorite.

We gave a lot away at one point because we had 12 kittens we kept two and then one was killed by an owl and the other just vanished.

Just got word our 1 day old chicks didn't hatch so now we are delayed until JUN 1.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are getting an assorted amount of 8 chicks this Wednesday May 13 th

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 0

(3) What breeds do you have? Don't know yet

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Having fresh eggs, utilizing part of our 12 acres. Letting the kids grow up with some responsibility behind them. A since of accomplishment with getting coop built.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I have too many to count. I am one of those who loves to learn new things, but not master any. Currently working on calligraphy and gesture drawing. Also self teaching coding and web design plus trying to get YouTube channel off of the ground.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. My wife is an OR Supervisor nurse who really wants these chickens. We have one son that we adopted and we are adopting our second child in August. We have one dog no cats currently. They only last about 6 months out here. I want a pig, but wife says no.

I work as a data analyst at our hospital. I also fly drones in the side for photography and video work.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Searching for how to build a tractor chicken coop and found your site. I am still trying to hammer out a design for 8 chickens.

Welcome I am also from Nebraska! We have 6 goslings, plymouth rock rooster, 10 pullets about to lay (barnyard mixes), and 5 1 week old rhode island red pullets!

Since your wife vetoed the pig... suggest baby goats.They would definitely keep you entertained while you wait on your upcoming chicks to arrive.
