We have been bitten by the chicken bug......live in the country and we have a dog, 4 cats, 2 rabbits, and fish......Why not have some chickens too ! Anyway not sure about breed and such we are wanting dual purpose for sure, but to pull this off i promised wife she can get a silke....geeezzz. Anyway, any suggestions ? I have an idea as i checked out breeds section but any input would be very helpful. Brian

Welcome from Louisiana!!! Yes, you ought to get a Silkie or 3 -So sweet! They pile up in a heap @ night to sleep like one big fluff ball! And Frizzles are just the friendliest chickens ever! My 2 literally come up & "beg" to be held, or if that doesn't work, they try to fly up & perch on me! LOL. This is our first year with either of these breeds, but they are awesome. Not good egglayers though, I hear, soooooo.....we also have our tried & true EE's (sometimes labeled ameraucanas-whether correctly or not, who knows! LOL)) that lay light blue eggs daily, a black Austrolorp (so docile & sweet- lays 4-5 days a week & is over 2 yrs old!), & a slightly flighty Ideal 236 (White Leghorn layer cross) that lays DAILY @ 2 years old. i hear Buff Orps are great for starters too, & I hope to get a few next year. You will LOVE this bug!

Thanks, i found a local that will have Amercauna in about 2 weeks. Guess we'll try them out. Better get started on the coop.

Welcome from Alabama!
We're brand new to chickens, too, and are just raising a few for eggs. Can't really help you with the dual purpose, but I have to agree with cambriagardner about the BO's. We also have a Light Brahma that's turning into a HUGE chicken and a much smaller EE. Those three are about 5-6 weeks old now. We also have two Welsummer chicks that are a little over two weeks old, and we have been told they are fairly good layers.
