Hello! Can you help me and Butters? I went to pick up three satin silkies this morning and took in a fourth (EE silkie mix) for free because he had a bum leg. I accept it if the chick won't make it, but I will try first!

Butters is a day or two old. His left leg doesn't work right, he stands mainly on the other foot. He can flex and spread his toes, but minimally moves the leg, and manages to hop / shuffle to food and water. The leg and foot stay tucked up by his body. His hock is a little red and seems to be where the problem is? Otherwise healthy as far as I can tell.

Awwww, the pics are gorgeous!
I'm not sure, maybe the leg is broken?
Sorry, I will look at any thread that mentions chicks and your little guy is super adorable.

I dug into this a bit and handled the little chick a bit, I think that's what it is. I can actually move the tendon around a little, but as soon as the chick takes the leg back it falls back off.

I read about taping it, but I don't understand what I'm taping. What position are you taping the chicks leg in?

You might want to band aid the wound. It may get infected if it gets dirt and poo on it. Plus your other chicks will peck at him endlessly and he will be more damaged or even killed. I have a Senior chick now but had several others in the past that I made as House Pet Chickens. they stayed in a extra large crate at night had run of house during day. Vinyl floors help alot and so do chicken diapers. I fear if you do not separate them her mates will harm her when you are not looking. But preventing infection is key.

Copied from another post for you..... Can you feel a break or are there any swollen or hot areas that could be a sprain. Last year I had a hen like that. I made a splint from lollipop sticks, bandages and medical take. I broke four sticks to size and sanded them down so there was no splinters. I then put two on either side of the leg and wrapped the leg with a bandage then secured it with medical tape. I put the hen in a cage and gave her half a crushed vitamin tablet it her food and some garlic in her water. I kept her confined for a week, letting her out for ten minute spells just for fresh air. She greatly improved in one week so I changed the splint and let her out in her run with the other hens and she was almost perfect afterwards.

Working on post 12! Gosh chicks are SQUIRMY. Might have to wait a bit until I can get a second pair of hands over here.
