Newby with no chickens yet!

Wow, thanks so much for all the replies in such a short amount of time! I think I've found a great community here already. :)

I have a full time job outside my home, so I'm really only looking to have enough chickens for eggs, plus companionship. I've always loved animals but always lived in the city so dogs, cats, and rats are the only pets I've ever had. Besides the chickens I want to raise, I have a strange urge for a small number of goats but don't actually know what I'd do with them. LOL. I've done a little cold-process soap making, so maybe goat's milk soap, but since I already work full time job I need to make sure I don't bite off more than I can chew.

Awesome!

My dream is a couple of Alpcas. Great for hiking, ect

Next on my list is an anteater, for use in taking out ants in and around Coachella Valley. First I need to figure out best indestructable housing for one, lol

Welcome to BYC. Congratulations on doing the research before you actually bring in your chickens. I did that and it helped tremendously. Spend time in the Learning Center.

If you have specific questions and a quick search doesn't come up with anything useful, feel free to ask in the appropriate subforum. People are friendly here and happy to help even if the question is being asked for the hundredth time. :)

If you just want them for eggs and companionship then consider how many eggs you and your family go through on a regular basis that will kinda give you an idea of what breed to get and how many to get to where you aren't over run by eggs but at the same time you can always give away the extras

I live in the city at the moment but we are moving out to the country within the next month give or take but I have a big family the hubby and i + 4 kids we have a small flock of 7 at the moment (6 hens and a rooster) we have dual purpose chickens which mean they are good for eggs and meat right now they are just for eggs but once we get to the country we will be hatch more from the ones we have so that we can get eggs and meat from them

Once we get everything settled we plan on adding more livestock as well I'm a city girl that was lucky enough to find a country boy and we both want to get a decent amount of land to homestead and just live off the land as much as possible to where we have to buy the bare necessities
